There is no doubting that the spectacle of Italian football is one of the best in the world. The flares, fans and fashion that surround the national obsession on the peninsula make for some striking and memorable images. Many of these have been captured by photographer Tim Reder and presented in his splendid book 'Calcissimo'

It's rare that a self-published book makes it way into these pages, but Tim Reder's affectionate, visceral look at Italy's obsession with football warrants special mention. It won't win any awards for design or layout but Reder captivates with this collection of photographs, successfully getting under the skin of the not-so-beautiful game, from the ragged, dusty pitches of the local leagues to the insane fervour on show at Milan's famous San Siro stadium. There is minimal text, but his images don't need it - they tell their own story. It's not for everyone, but this is a curio that football enthusiasts would do well to hunt down.

My book arrived today and it is truly a work of art. With images varying from pitches in obsure locations, through kids playing footie in the street to the big players and big team Curvas. It really is fantastic and a great gift for anyone interested in Calcio. I'd say it's highly recommended and first class quality. Every time I look at the pics I see something different. 10/10
